N-I-O AMBI A Writer's Retreat

This design project is an extension of the competition entry for the 2003 Australasian Student Interior Design Competition – The Poetry of Space. It was produced for the qualifying round which would then be nominated as entry for “A Writer’s Retreat” competition organised by the Commonwealth Association of Architects.

The preliminary design concepts were maintained and alterations were required to meet a new set of requirements.

Large panels were used to divert the writer’s view towards the sky when he engages in his act of writing and composing.

During the summer, water is channelled through the panel system which will cool the interior space. In winter, solar energy is converted into electrical power by means of solar panels to heat up the water in the panel system.

Transparent and translucent materials have been applied to promote vastness in the space. The space is washed in white finish in order to capture the colours of dawn and dusk.

The design is eco-friendly through the extraction of both kinetic and light energy from the principal energy source – sun.

Competition entry: 2003 Australasian Student Interior Design Competition – The Poetry of Space

Client profile: NICK DAVIS has established a reputation in the mid 1980’s as a music composer, songwriter, vocalist and keyboardist. In 1997, he produced “Tears of the Moon”, which contained Contemporary style instrumental ambient music.

“N-I-O” refers to “NEW-IN-OLD”, which is one of the principle applied in the design. Contemporary design substitutes the old boxy form. Its section has been reconstructed by the means of modern construction. The existing west façade was maintained to serve as a disguise to the new content”.

“N-I-O AMBI” also refers to “NEO-AMBIENCE”, which defines the characteristic of the writer’s ambient music that was presented in a contemporary manner”.

The idea of layering was extracted from the characteristics of his music, which is a composition of multiple layers of soothing rhythm and melody.

Natural elements, like the sky, water and plants are brought into the space to encourage him to write. Vastness and simplicity instils tranquillity.

White and light grey surfaces trap the dawn and dusk sunlight that flood into the space. Introduction of light passage is intended to bring in more sunlight into the space at dawn and dusk.

The proposed site is potentially exposed to noise from the traffic and education centre. The façade facing the street was maintained to serve as acoustic barrier with additional sound insulation.

The sound of falling water and rustling sound of tall grass are introduced to reduce the level of unwanted noise.

PAR@QUATIC CENTRE is an aquatic centre specially designed to cater for the need of physically-challenged people. This centre will promote closer relationship between ambulant people and the unfortunate ones.

Though, we have entered the cyber age, this group of people is still living on the brink of the society. Their lives are bounded to wheelchairs and they have little priority to enjoy human-made space. As a result, they tend to isolate themselves from the society.

Therefore, PAR@QUATIC CENTRE will perform its role in bringing them into the light and regaining their confidence to face the reality of life.

PAR@QUATIC CENTRE is like a “MACHINE” that induces people to move around the space. The design of the interior creates curiosity that encourages physically-challenged people to explore the space despite their mobility defect.

As a whole, this “MACHINE-LIKE” aquatic centre acts as a complete physiotherapy mechanism that works up their physical bodies and at the same time, promotes independence and positive perception in them.

Modern Arts in Zest MAi-Ze

This research project explored the principles/qualities that are embodied in an ear of sweet corn (maize), or known scientifically as Zea mays L. var. saccharata. These acquired principles were translated into a set of ideas or lexicons, which were then developed into functional interior design solutions for an art gallery. Concept: BIO-MIMICKING THE FLOW OF SPERMATOZOON IN THE OVUM

The incubators in the care unit are assigned with different colours. Wayfinding is achieved through the application of similar colours to light panels embedded in the floor. In addition, this colour coding approach promotes a sense of belonging for the families. The furniture layout is configured in a manner that facilitates the circulation flow and nurses' routine.

Sufficient floor area at baby stations encourages parents to participate in care-giving. Issues relating to the height and materiality of baby stations have been dealt with to provide privacy for the families. Ceiling-mounted screens facilitate nurses’ monitoring routine on infants’ conditions.

The pod-like incubator provides visual comfort to parents compared to conventional box-like incubator. This mobile incubator is designed to incorporate a seat, which can be inserted under the incubator platform.

The visuals produced for this design project were incorporated in DOCUMENT 12, ISSUE 2003/2004 published by Curtin University of Technology, Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design, Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture, 2005
